Glossary

  • Denotation - Obvious showing of a situation from a media text
  • Connotation - An implied situation and meaning from a media text
  • Montage Editing - A scene made from many shots
  • Juxtaposition - Two things placed together to show comparison
  • Indexing - Pointing something out. A clear point of meaning
  • Diagetic Sound - Sound that the character can hear
  • Non - Diagetic Sound - Sounds that only the viewer can hear
  • Symbols - Stand in place of an object
  • Rule of Thirds - An image divided into thirds is more pleasing to look at
  • Fonts:  Serif - embellishments, flourishes, flicky bits  Sans Serif - No flicky bits
  • Narrative Enigma - An interest created by a desire to know how and in what form an equilibrium will be restored by the end of the story. The idea of a riddle or a puzzle is referred to as a narrative enigma.
  • Enigma Codes - Sets the scene while giving very little away. Clues are given but very little will be known and questions will be asked.
  • Inter-textual Reference - A reference within a 'text' to another 'text'. Inter-textual references flatter the audience in most cases.

  • Article Headline - Large font at the top of the article aimed to tell the reader what the name of the article is and try to get him/her to read it
  • Gutters - Spaces in-between the columns and/or images
  • Kicker - An introduction to the article to try and get you to read it. Usually in a bolder font and below the headline.
  • Caption - Used to describe the picture, usually below it.
  • Dropcap - First letter of the first paragraph is made longer and sometimes a different colour
